Direction is better with speed.

A company rarely stalls because the work got worse. It stalls because the structure underneath cannot support the growth of the brand.

A decision that used to take a morning now takes a month. The whole picture lives in one person's head, so the company can only move as fast as that person can think. I'm Jerico Lugo, and that is the work I do.

The same four questions, every time.

Q1 Where are you, exactly?
Not roughly.
Q2 Where do you want to go?
Not where you can go.
Q3 What is the road, traced backward?
From the Emerald City to today.
Q4 What can you do now?
The first three steps.

Nobody owned the whole decision

The decisions that cause it are never only financial, never only legal, never only managerial. They get made one discipline at a time, by people who each see a third of the board, and whatever nobody owned turns up later as the problem.

Most of the work is in the first two: where you are, exactly, and where you actually want to go. People are rarely honest about the first, and almost never asked the second in a way that lets them answer with anything but where the last three years say they can.

Some of what that has looked like in the work: a farm under a notice of violation, back in full compliance without losing a day of operations, its books now closing in minutes instead of hours; a consultant with ten years of unseen work made findable, now charging roughly double; a trainer's market authority up twelve points in four months, acted on within days.

The Thinking

All essays
  • Where You Are Now

Most founders can describe where they want to be in five years. Ask where they are today and the answer goes soft. A roadmap drawn from an approximate location takes you somewhere approximate.

  • Where You Can Go, and Where You Want to Go

Most plans are built from what a company can already reach, which is why they arrive somewhere nobody chose. A destination set by your current capability is a forecast wearing a plan's clothes.

  • Trace the Road Backward

A skipped step does not stay where you left it. It waits, and it comes back with a bigger title. When it does, the way out is rarely to look at the whole mountain.

Who is Jerico Lugo?

Jerico Lugo

Jerico Lugo is a strategy consultant and brand equity architect based in the Philippines, working with clients across APAC, EMEA and the United States. He founded Studio JNSQ after six years in public relations spent on one question: why a company’s reputation is never counted in its financials the way marketing and advertising are. He advises founders, and the people who run companies with them, on decisions that cross finance, law and management at once. He has created three proprietary frameworks for business; the flagship, the Market Authority Diamond™, scores what the market can actually verify about a company and shows which side of the business is holding its value back.

Before Studio JNSQ he spent six years in media and public relations, from adobo Magazine to the Wall Street Journal, and fifteen industry awards were won for his clients. He also took an operating role in his family's poultry business, where he returned it to full environmental compliance and built its operating system. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and of the Business and Management Consultants Association of the Philippines.
